Scientist recognized for contribution to business
PIONEERING Wakefield business leader, Margaret Wood, MBE has been recognised for her contribution to science and business at a major awards event.
The woman who founded and now chairs ICW(UK) Ltd more than 25 years ago was given the Yorkshire Woman of Achievement award at the annual celebration lunch in recognition for her work in industry and specifically manufacturing.
Surrounded by family Mrs Wood, who stated working in the science sector in the early 1960s at ICI in Harrogate said it had been an emotional occasion.
“Receiving this award demonstrates how things have changed for the better for women in industry since I started my career,” she said.
“Thanks to our early work women and girls now have access to more opportunity and receive greater respect and recognition for their achievements and contribution to business and science and technology.
“Their challenge now is to ensure that the technologies being developed are implemented to benefit societal change” she added.
It was only the second time that the Science world has been recognised at the annual awards which draw nominations from a diverse cross section of society. They help raise money for the Sue Ryder Foundation.
As well as her work at ICW (UK) Ltd, Margaret is also a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and has contributed to Yorkshire business through her membership of the Institute of Directors Council. Locally, Margaret was also chair of Wakefield First during a critical time in its history.
“Yorkshire still has incredible manufacturing capabilities that have and will continue to help drive forward growth and prosperity for everyone if we continue to invest in skills and technology and I am delighted that women are playing a full part in that.
“MY family were with me for the award lunch and it made me realise that the work my late husband, Tony started has been continued by me and ICW (UK) Ltd, which made it a very emotional experience for us all,” she added.
Margaret Wood is chair of the IET panel of judges for this year’s Innovation Awards. Entries can still be made at http://www.ietinnovationawards.org/
